I believe that 'understanding is the key to learning'. When
teaching golf to my students, I thoroughly explain and
demonstrate what is required to make a necessary change or
understand a specific swing concept. More importantly, I take
the time to explain 'why' they need to learn it and how it fits
into the overall components of their swing. Over the years, I
have studied and tried out most of the golf swing instruction
methods being promoted by the many teachers of this great game
and they all have their merits. However, they tend to focus on
teaching the 'tour level' swing model to all students regardless
of their ability. This model requires the skill, timing and
flexibility of a reasonably athletic person. I customize my
lesson format to fit the student's capability and body type.
I
use a simple step by step process to teach the basic traditional
swing of blending the power of the forearm crossover and hands with the body
turn.
I teach a second, flatter swing method that uses more of 'core' turn for power with passive arms and hands (better suited for the advanced more athletic golfer).
I teach a third method, popularized by Jimmy Ballard, which is more of an upright baseball like swing initiated by the power of the lower body. I highly recommend this method if you have back problems.
All methods work very well and I leave it up to the students to
choose the one they feel more comfortable with. My goal in
teaching golf is to enable my students to acquire a better
understanding of the golf swing motion and ball flight behaviour.
This helps them to identify and correct their swing faults when
they are on their own. |
